With winter and colder temperatures coming to Northwest Indiana soon, your heater is going to be running a lot more often to keep your home or office warm during the frigid winters. However, before kicking that heater into full gear, there are some things to keep in mind, the do's and don'ts of making sure your heater is working at it's very best this winter.

Leave your heating off until it starts to get to the colder. If you wait until the winter to turn on your heating the walls will lose the heat they have stored over time. This will end up costing a lot more money and take a lot longer to heat the walls back up.

Try to save money by not heating your home. The health of you and your family always comes first and at the end of the day, it will always cost more if you end up getting sick and calculate work sick days, doctors and medicine costs.

Attempt to make your home warmer quickly by turning the thermostat on as high as it will go. This will cause your home to become too warm to the point of just being uncomfortable for everyone there. Higher does not mean immediately heating everything quicker.

Open your windows for a half hour in the morning. While it may sound odd to do in the winter, this helps get moisture out and prevent condensation that can cause mold build up.

Use heating for at least three hours at a time when you decide to turn it on. You should have a timer attached to your heater that allows you to regulate when it automatically turns on and off. A good rule of thumb is to turn on your heat an hour before bed and if you're home the entire day, make sure the heat stays on for 3 hours or more and at a consistent temperature that you can feel comfortable with.

Get your heater checked regularly as well as making sure your gas is examined. By doing regular checks you can make sure that heating is as efficient and cost-effective as possible leaving you warmer and spending less money than you need to.

These are all simple tips to make sure you stay warm and your heater is working well during the cold Indiana winters. If you have any questions or need assistance with your heater, please contact us. If you have heater needs in Northwest Indiana, we'd love to help you out.
