While the weather may still be warm and the feeling of summer still hasn't left yet in Northwest Indiana, there's plenty to think about when it comes to your HVAC system. To steal a phrase from a popular TV show, winter is coming and it'll be time for your heating system to kick into high gear. Here's a look at why thinking about your HVAC system now is important and what you need to keep in mind as the cold months start creeping in.

Winter can be brutal on your HVAC system

The heating and cooling effectiveness of your HVAC system is important during all seasons, but winter is one of the worst times to have to deal with problems with your home’s heating system. During the summer, a faulty HVAC system can cause discomfort in the boiling heat, but it cannot compare to the more serious issues a faulty heating system can bring. You can't fix the extreme cold with space heaters and below freezing temperatures can pose a dangerous situation for you and your family.

What threatens your HVAC system in the winter?

Heavy snowfall and ice-cold winds can put a serious dent in the longevity and productivity of your system. If you know of any issues that are causing issues with your system, now is the time to get them fixed. Waiting until the winter months can cause even more issues, provide a more uncomfortable experience waiting for your HVAC system to be repaired and cost more money.

Things you can do now

There are a few regular steps that you can take now to make sure that your system is running at max efficiency. This includes:

  • Changing your air conditioner's air filter. We recommend you do this regularly and if possible, once a month.
  • Run a thermostat test to see how long it takes for different rooms in the house to reach a temperature that you feel comfortable in. If it takes longer than usual, there might be an issue that needs to be addressed.
  • Properly seal and repair drafty areas in your home.
  • Turn off appliances you know will not be in use.
  • Plan a furnace inspection in the late summer or early fall to make sure it's working properly. If it's not maintained, it can cause an increase in your heating bill.

Save money in the long run

While many feel that having small repairs here and there is a cheaper method than installing a new system, it's actually the opposite. If there are issues, it's best to replace it with a newer one and if there are repairs that need to be done, it's best to have them done earlier than later to save both time and money.
